The Environmental Footprint of rPET Is Lower than vPET

FENC adopts the LC-Impact life cycle impact model, which measures biodiversity loss, to compare the environmental impacts of rPET and vPET. This model uses the Potentially Disappeared Fraction of species per year (PDF·year)—the proportion of species potentially disappearing globally each year under specific environmental impacts—to integrating the assessments of all environmental burdens across the product life cycle to evaluate their impacts on nature.

Analysis shows that rPET has significantly lower PDF.year values in terms of climate change and water stress. vPET production involves the extraction and processing of petrochemical raw materials, whereas rPET is made from recycled plastic bottles, thereby saving fossil resources and reducing GHG emissions from plastic waste decomposition. In terms of water resources, rPET production is more water-efficient, reducing stress on water resources.

Compared with vPET, rPET reduces overall ecological impacts by 83%, demonstrating lower dependencies and impacts on natural resources. FENC has also extended these recycling technologies into diverse applications, including food packaging, non-food packaging, functional apparel, footwear, automotive materials, and household products, underscoring its commitment to and practice of environmental protection and sustainability.

Note: This analysis was conducted using the SimaPro 9.6 Ecoinvent 3 database, applying the LC-IMPACT | average preference | all impacts | infinite method. The assessment covers the cradle-to-gate life cycle impacts of 1 kilogram of rPET and vPET, including the environmental impacts associated with transportation.
