FEG Leads Green Transformation: 2024 Green Procurement Surpasses NT$29.2 Billion, Building a Sustainable Ecosystem Across Ten Major Industries

From:Far Eastern Group

Amidst the global surge toward climate action and Net-Zero emissions, corporate sustainability has evolved from individual decarbonization to the green upgrading of entire supply chains. As one of Taiwan’s most influential conglomerates, Far Eastern Group (FEG) has deeply integrated ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) principles into its core DNA. Leveraging the synergistic power of its ten major industries, FEG delivered a stellar green performance in 2024, with total green procurement exceeding NT$29.2 billion, demonstrating a steadfast commitment to constructing a robust green ecosystem.

Telecommunication and Technology: Far EasTone (FET) Empowers Local Green Supply Chains

In the Telecom and Technology sector, FET acts as both a catalyst for digital transformation and a pivotal force in the local green economy. FET actively fosters domestic industries; in 2024, excluding international brands, procurement from Taiwanese companies accounted for 99.5% of its total expenditure. To bolster environmental and social initiatives, FET mandates strict adherence to green procurement guidelines across its vendor network. During decision-making, the procurement department consults with energy-saving task forces to prioritize high-efficiency specifications. Furthermore, following the adoption of RoHS and WEEE standards in 2023, FET expanded its 2024 green metrics to include EPEAT-certified smartphones, amplifying its influence in the Telecommunication sector.

Manufacturing Green Revolution: Circular Economy in Petrochemicals, Polyester Materials, and Cement

FEG’s manufacturing arm, spanning petrochemicals, chemical fibers, and textiles, utilizes rigorous management to drive transition.

  • Far Eastern New Century (FENC): Through its joint procurement center, FENC manages ESG impact assessments and vendor screening. In 2024, its green procurement surged by 111% compared to 2023. By year-end, cumulative green procurement surpassed NT$19.6 billion, earning the "Excellent Green Procurement Unit" award from the Ministry of Environment for the sixth consecutive year.
  • Oriental Union Chemical Corp (OUCC): OUCC prioritizes government-certified eco-label, energy-saving, and water-saving products. In 2024, OUCC invested NT$49 million in green-certified products, such as LED lighting and IE3-compliant rotating equipment, achieving a 99% green compliance rate in these categories.
  • Everest Textiles: By evaluating and educating suppliers on green models—covering logistics, packaging, and raw materials—Everest Textiles ensures a sustainable supply chain rooted in corporate ethics.
  • Asia Cement Corporation (ACC): ACC excels in circular economy practices by transforming industrial waste into alternative raw materials and fuels. By utilizing coal ash, gypsum, and RDF (Refuse-Derived Fuel), ACC not only localizes procurement but also provides critical solutions for Taiwan’s waste management challenges.

Retail and Finance: Creating a Low-Carbon Consumption Ecosystem

In the consumer-facing sectors, FEG is guiding the public toward sustainable living.

  • Far Eastern Department Stores (FEDS): Achieving a 100% green procurement ratio in 2024, FEDS has been recognized by the New Taipei City Government as an outstanding green enterprise for eight consecutive years.
  • Far Eastern SOGO: FE SOGO follows three pillars: "Green Procurement, Social Innovation Procurement, and Leasing over Buying." In 2024, green procurement reached nearly NT$70 million. By adopting a "leasing" model for hardware like official vehicles and deposit machines, SOGO saw its sustainable procurement grow by 59% year-over-year.
  • Big City Shopping Center: Committed to 100% local procurement, Big City prioritized eco-labeled and FSC/PEFC certified products. Its green procurement reached NT$6.87 million in 2024, maintaining its certified status in Hsinchu City for seven straight years.
  • Far Eastern International Bank (FEIB): With NT$19.6 million in green procurement, FEIB was honored as a "Green Procurement Exemplar" by the Taipei City Government. The bank mandates energy-saving LED lighting and low-formaldehyde green building materials for all new and renovated branches.

Shipping, Healthcare, and Education: A Collective Push Toward Net-Zero

  • U-Ming Marine Transport: To reach the 2050 Net-Zero goal, U-Ming launched its Green Supply Chain Project in 2021. In 2024, green procurement totaled NT$5.12 million. Through supplier engagement meetings, U-Ming plays a leading role in transitioning the maritime industry toward a low-carbon future.
  • Yuan Ze University: The university achieved a 100% green procurement rate for designated items (such as IT equipment and air conditioners) in 2024, embedding sustainability into its educational mission.
  • Far Eastern Memorial Hospital (FEMH): Exceeding NT$10 million in non-group procurement, FEMH prioritizes eco-labeled office and IT equipment, contributing significantly to environmental protection within the healthcare system.

A New Era of Sustainable Influence

The NT$29.2 billion in green procurement recorded in 2024 is more than a financial figure; it is FEG’s resolute response to global climate action. From green raw material development to low-carbon retail and finance, FEG is building a resilient, sustainable value chain across its diverse industries. Looking forward, Far Eastern Group will continue to deepen engagement with local suppliers and champion the circular economy, leading Taiwan’s industries toward a Net-Zero future.
